10 MOST COMMON SMARTPHONE MYTHS
-DEEPAK PRAKASH
The world of smartphones is a very vast one.Its easy to get confused and misguided in this often confusing world of rapidly changing technological terms and gimmicks. Here are our pick for top 10 misconceptions among smartphone users. As you need through the list that most of the myths are due to marketing techniques used by big companies and due to outdated beliefs.
Lets get started.......
1.More Ram = More performance
Let’s get this out
of the way: amount of ram is not a measure of the performance power of a
smartphone. It is just the measure of how much data a smartphone can hold in
background. Although it’s an oversimplification RAM is the place where all the
programs which are running at a time, are stored. It has nothing to do with how
fast these programs run.Nowadays
smartphones come with an extremely unnecessary amount of ram like 16GB as in Samsung
Note 20 ultra. Now you may ask how much ram do I really need. The answer to
that is that it really depends on your usage. For most users 6 GB of ram is
more than enough for daily usage. The only exception is when you use your
smartphones for high end gaming and video editing and rendering in which case I
would recommend 8GB.2.A higher megapixel count in camera produces better photos
This is one of the most
common misconceptions among a vast majority of people. Its easy to see where
this concept comes from : More pixels crammed into a sensor must yield a better
photo right? Unfortunately not! To make this idea more clear lets understand how
megapixels work. If you have a 1MP camera you have 1 million pixels in your
camera sensor. Even though higher MP count increases pixel count it drastically
decreases the pixel size which decreases amount of light entering the sensor
which ultimately lead to bad indoor and artificial light shots.
So we can conclude that higher
MP cameras need not affect the photos as much as a better image processing or a
better censor would. The only case where
a higher MP camera would benefit is when you zoom into the photos or if you
take photos in ‘perfect lighting’.
3.Charging phones overnight affects the battery life
Another related myth is that
one should drain out the battery before charging it again and that constand
charge ‘topup’s are bad.
This is completely wrong. Today’s
phones use lithium-ion batteries, which don’t suffer from memory loss and are
smart enough to regulate their power management. So this argument does not make
any sense.
4.Removing sim card prevents tracking
This myth comes mostly from
the movies where they make you believe that if you remove the sim card no one
will be able to track you down. Another one which goes alongside with it is
that airplane plan mode too prevents tracking. This is not true especially if
your phone is already hacked. In that case the only way to prevent tracking is
either to remove the battery or to buy Signal blocking pouches which are easily
available online.
5.More signal bars means faster network

This myth has some truth to it. But it has been badly interpreted by our society . While signal strength affects the network speed , its not the only factor. The main factor is network crowding. If there are a lot of people on the same network as you are , then your network speed would be significantly lower. This is the main reason for slow network speeds.
6.You need an antivirus program in your android phone
This myth comes from windows
pc users where it is actually true. But in the case of android smartphones it
is actually not at all necessary. If you don’t wander around in risky websites
and just download apps from playstore only you are safe. The same is true for
memory management apps and battery saving apps. In fact it actually negatively
affects the performance and the battery life as it always runs in the
background (quite ironical right?). The privacy risk is also a major concern as
they have access to all the files in our smartphone.BE CAREFUL!!7.Rooting is “BAD”
It is completely safe to root
your phone as long as you know properly what you are doing. Else, you can brick
your phone and later commit some big mistakes which can eventually lead to the
compromise of your private useful info (mistakes like downloading and
installing apps from untrusted sources which may contain malware). But rooting
actually opens up a whole new world of customization. You can control
everything about the smartphone from the boot logo to individual icons. Also
there are a lot of amazing apps which require root access.
Thus in summary if you know
what you are doing then rooting is perfectly normal and healthy. But keep in
mind that rooting or jailbreaking (in the case of iphones) are perfectly legal
although it voids the warranty of the product.
8.Torrenting is illegal
All of us have used torrent
to download various things. But we may have come across torrent sites saying
that it has been blocked by authorities. This naturally had made us to believe that
torrenting is illegal while in fact it is not. It is perfectly legal as long as
you don’t download items with copyright which include all the movies, TV shows
etc.so basically torrent is just a way to share data.
The short answer : as long as
the item is copyrighted and you don’t own it, then downloading it (for free)
via torrent is illegal. Using a torrent client and downloading torrents in
itself isn’t illegal, as you could be downloading things that aren’t protected
by copyright.
9.IP rating means ‘waterproof’
An IP rating tells you the
level of protection a device offers against solids and liquids. The “IP” stands
for Ingress Protection and is followed by two numbers. It is just a standard.
Suppose if you have a smartphone with IP68 Rating then it only means that it
can be immersed in 1.5 meters of ‘freshwater’ for upto 30 minutes. It does not
account for any other water sources like cooldrinks , poolwater etc.
So you better think twice before going swimming with it.
10.Letting Wifi and Bluetooth turned on drains battery
This was true in early days
but now they have become much more advanced and smart so that they do not use
much power even if turned on while not in use.The battery consumption of these
are very small and is much negligible that turning them off does not actually
matter.
On the other hand it is very
inconvenient to turn on and off them every single time you use them. So its
better to let them on.
